The mechanism and role of redispersible emulsion powder in tile adhesives

The modification of cement mortars by polymers allows the two to obtain complementary effects, thus enabling polymer-modified mortars to be used in many special applications. In addition, due to the advantages of dry mortars in terms of quality control, construction operations, storage and environmental protection, redispersible emulsion powders provide an effective technical means for the production of special dry mortar products. Tile adhesive is one of the three most used varieties of special dry mortar products. Let's take a look at the mechanism of action of dispersible emulsion powder on tile adhesive.
Because of its decorative and functional properties such as durability, water resistance and ease of cleaning, tiles are used in a wide range of applications: walls, floors, ceilings, fireplaces, murals and swimming pools, and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The traditional method of pasting tiles is the thick layer construction method, i.e. the ordinary mortar is first applied to the back of the tiles, and then the tiles are pressed onto the base, with a mortar layer thickness of about 10 to 30 mm. although this method is ideal for construction on uneven base, the disadvantages are low tiling efficiency, high technical proficiency requirements for workers, increased risk of falling off due to the poor flexibility of the mortar, and difficulty in controlling the quality of the mortar at the construction site. The quality of the mortar is difficult to control strictly. This method is only suitable for highly absorbent tiles, which need to be soaked in water to achieve sufficient bond strength before being applied.
The tiling method currently used in Europe is the so-called thin-layer method, in which a toothed spatula is used to pre-scrape polymer-modified tile adhesive onto the surface of the base to be tiled to form a mortar layer with raised stripes and uniform thickness, and then the tiles are pressed onto it and slightly twisted, with a mortar layer thickness of approximately 2 to 4 mm. It has good adhesion to different types of substrates as well as to surfaces such as full glass tiles with very low water absorption, good flexibility to absorb stresses caused by temperature differences, etc., excellent resistance to sagging, long enough open time for thin layers, easy handling and no need to pre-wet the tiles in water. This method is simple to use and easy to control the quality of work on site.
